The Saskatchewan government says it is investing $2 million to expand its electronic monitoring program, adding 100 new GPS-enabled units to enhance community safety. The funding, announced for the 2026–27 fiscal year, will increase the province’s capacity to supervise individuals released into the community under court-ordered conditions. Community Safety Minister Michael Weger said electronic monitoring provides an important tool for corrections staff. “Electronic monitoring gives our corrections employees the tools they need to track individuals in the community and respond quickly when conditions are breached,” Weger said in a statement. The system allows probation officers to track an offender’s movements in real time, enforce curfews and set location-based restrictions, such as keeping individuals away from specific addresses, schools or playgrounds. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/wco-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1632277500385-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1632277500385]) s.setTargeting('story_id', 'saskatchewan-to-expand-electronic-monitoring-program-with-2m-investment'); s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); Officials say probation officers work closely with police, including specialized enforcement teams, to respond quickly if conditions are violated. The province says the expansion will help manage offender caseloads more effectively while improving oversight and public safety. Electronic monitoring is considered one of the most intensive supervision options available for individuals serving sentences in the community.

Saskatchewan is a province in Western Canada. It is bordered to the west by Alberta, to the north by the Northwest Territories, to the east by Manitoba, to the northeast by Nunavut, and to the south by the United States (Montana and North Dakota). Saskatchewan and neighbouring Alberta are the only landlocked provinces in Canada. In 2025, Saskatchewan's population was estimated at 1,266,234. Nearly 10% of Saskatchewan's total area of 651,900 square kilometres (251,700 sq mi) is fresh water, mostly rivers, reservoirs, and lakes.

Saskatchewanians live primarily in the southern prairie half of the province, while the northern half is mostly forested and sparsely populated. Roughly half live in Saskatchewan's two largest cities; Regina (the province's capital city) and Saskatoon (the province's largest city). Other notable cities in Saskatchewan include Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current, North Battleford, Estevan, Weyburn, Melfort, and the border city of Lloydminster. English is the primary language of the province, with 82.4% of Saskatchewanians speaking English as their first language.
